In late summer, I was painting along Seven Bridges Road ...or under it rather. It is not my normal scene, but looking at what we may have overlooked is important to our growth as artists...really for all of us in every field... in our lives. I took it as far as I could before the light gave out, and finished it back in the studio from memory.

This subtle sunset was my reward after a long day of painting. I pulled over, leaned on the car, took a picture, and soaked it in. A few days later, I came across the curious arrangement of round bales on a scrappy spring field above a bend on the Rush River, but the light was flat, and I wasn’t able to make much of it. Both scenes would come to mind frequently, dogging me for having left them unpainted. I drew on my experience and imagination, as they came together in the studio.

This one took three mornings. The sun rises so fast because it was hardly down. So the long shadows retreat back to their sources quickly. As the light changes, it leaves me to paint more from memory and imagination. It is like putting away the recipe when your cooking and seasoning to taste.

“Autumn Arrives” was created as part of an international Plein air event organized by Oil Painters of America, with artists from all over the world painting on September 11 and 12.
I spent the two days working on the rugged shore of the St. Louis River as it flows through Jay Cooke State Park. This is a quiet bend amidst miles of rapids. There was a touch of fall in the air and on the leaves. The September sun came and went with the passing clouds.

I chose to pursue this scene after struggling with my first attempt to paint “Stonehammer.” Each time I backed up from that painting. That thin blue line of the rapids wouldn’t leave me alone. After I wiped the struggling painting, I picked up all my gear to face the opposite direction, and answer the invitation. I established that blue line of the rapids with the second or third brush stroke. The rest of the painting grew out of that coming together of river, bank, and willow.

“North of Ellsworth” was painted on location on one of the last warm days of fall. The once regal white barn had seen better days, but even its current state, it had been left for us to admire and remember that things beautifully made, never lose their utility because few things are profoundly useful as beauty.

Some paintings are hours away, and others are up the street. This was painted several years ago, back when we used to walk my kids to school. We turned left at this house, but we rarely walked alone. There are a handful of families on our block with kids the same or similar ages, and we’d all walk together with tag along sibs and an occasional dog. The walk is a just a couple of blocks, maybe 10 minutes. We all would visit along the way, cultivating friendships just like our neighbor with her tulips 🌷🌷

“From the Top of Ryan Road” was painted outside of Madison, high above the Driftless area of South Western Wisconson. I was exploring a valley when I came upon Ryan Road. It shares its name with my youngest brother, so I followed the road. Up and up it went, offering this heavenly view of all that lays beyond the carpet of Queen Anne's Lace.

It was a beautiful August afternoon at the historic Schech's Mill in Houston County, Minnesota, United States. “Canadian Cloud Shadows” began as a Plein Air painting, on Rose Lake, who’s shores are on both sides of the US/Canada border. Between the Boundary Waters Lakes, are the portages, and these were magical: Around every bend seemed to be waterfalls, scenic overlooks, quiet bays, or rushing streams. Not knowing when I’d be back, it was hard to settle down and just paint one.

This was painted during a special day at the Walker Art Center’s Sculpture Garden, where I was one of a handful of artists invited to paint on location. It was one of the more unique experiences I have had painting on location. It was like painting on the set of Fellini movie. There were a dozen languages being spoken by all the unicyclists, wedding proposals, wedding pictures, children running, parents chasing, dogs barking, people reading, and the group that took the cake was a group of eastern European moms all breast feeding behind me. Each time I backed up from my painting, they laughed and giggled at my obvious embarrassment. Yet most of that was all going on mostly behind me. Everyone came in went like waves on the beach, while I painted.

This large Plein Air painting was created over the course of 5 evenings. I was initially captivated by how the farm seemed to tumble down the hillside, but once I got my bearings, and realized how the setting sun would be lighting them up, everything was organized around my anticipation of the evening light.

Twilight seemed to linger longer in the wide-sweeping valley. There was enough light to paint by. My sunburned cheeks felt warm in the soothing evening breeze. It seemed like ages since sunset had finished its showing off. A few deer bound almost invisibly through the marsh; only their white tails wave goodnight. The night came, the moon kept climbing, and the coyote calls drifted down through the valley.

Despite my efforts to stay out of the wind, it wasn’t meant to be, so the chop of the water, is echoed in the brush work.

Painted on a quiet summer evening looking across Superior Bay into St Louis Bay through a gap between some homes along Minnesota Avenue in Duluth. I had driven by it on previous visits, and it felt great to finally answer the invitation of light, air, and industry .

I drove by this scene along Belle Creek, almost every night I drove back to St Paul from Red Wing. It is so rhythmic and harmonious, I couldn’t let it go. It was interesting to paint a scene that I had rehearsed in my mind.

Stonehammer I was captivated by the way the shadow of the cliff rolled across the bottom of the crystal clear river while connecting and contrasting the foreground and background of the scene. It took a couple of attempts and this one required a few visits.

"Slipping Away" is the first painting I created on location after a month of being home in the studio during the early stages of Minnesota's lockdown. It was good to be out on a chilly morning with the bright sun and a sharp breeze in one of my favorite valleys.”

"Winter’s End" was painted on location down in the dizzying maze of valleys and creeks of Southern Minnesota's Driftless Region. It is from the last day I was out prior to all of us staying in. After painting it and "Coyote Calls" Beauty is an invitation to seek what may seem beyond us, with the hope that we may recognize what has always been within us.
